Karen Rich - Learn Greek
About me
I have always enjoyed languages and studied French and German at school and university. After spells in France, Germany and Israel (where I learned Hebrew) I spent six years teaching English as a Foreign Language in Thessaloniki, Greece. While I was there I fell in love with the Greek language and with the people. I became fluent in spoken and written Greek and immersed myself in the culture and customs of the people. I still spend some time every year in Greece to keep my knowledge and experience up to date.

About my learners
Today, I love sharing my knowledge of the Greek language and enthusiasm for all things Greek with other people, and doing this in a light-hearted way which is fun for all. My learners are mainly people who want to learn Greek because:
they visit or want to visit Greece or Cyprus for holidays
- they have visited Greece or Cyprus a number of times and want to improve their holiday experience
- they have family connections in the countries
- they have bought or are buying property there

About my experience
I have plenty of experience of teaching Greek for professional purposes, for example I have run courses for Customs and Excise officers, for tourist managers, and for leisure and tourism students.
Now I run my own small business offering Greek tuition for all.
During the last twenty years, I have taught at a number of academic establishments, mostly in the north-west of England but also further afield. Examples include:
| Lancashire College of Adult Education in Chorley |
The Brasshouse Centre in Birmingham |
| Lancaster University |
Accrington & Rossendale College |
| The University of Central Lancashire |
Blackpool & the Fylde College |

About my reputation and awards
Over the years I have gained a reputation with learners and professional colleagues for effective teaching. I pride myself on my lively, communicative style and am keen to build an excellent rapport with all my learners.
This successful approach has earned national recognition, and I have been delighted to receive various teaching awards. For example in 2002 I was selected as one of the ‘outstanding tutors’ in the Institute of Adult and Continuing Education (NIACE) Adult Tutor awards, and in 2006 I won the prestigious ‘David Crystal Trophy’ awarded by the Chartered Institute of Linguists’ for ‘fostering the study of languages’. I was honoured to receive this award from Prince Michael of Kent at a ceremony in London. |
